Another Eye Appointment, Another Prescription

February 23, 2009 · 2 Comments

We had another eye appointment today for C.

It’s always a very LONG appointment whenever she gets her eyes dialated.   We were at the eye doctor’s office for almost 3 hours.  But, C did very well and was not fussy at all.  She played with the toys and was quite cooperative when the Optometrist and the PO looked at her eyes.

First, we’re going to try to increase her prescription to +8.75 in both eyes and not have bifocals this time.  Her current prescription is +7.50 for distance and +10.50 for the bifocal part.  When her eyes were dialated, the Optometrist saw that her prescription strength can be increased for the distance portion.

We’ll go back at the end of April.  The hard part is that we have to start thinking about surgery.   The PO suggested to us to start thinking of getting a second opinion, etc.  It appears that C’s eyes and course of action for treatment are not cut and dry.   The non-accommodative part of her strabismus is on the borderline.  She also has a vertical eye turn which is not addressed by glasses.   We had brought a bunch of photos of C to the appointment.  There are times when her eyes are straight and others when they are turned (all with glasses).  It’s so hard to say if we want the risk of surgery.

S’s main concern is that if we elect surgery, then it should be due to medical reasons (i.e. eyesight poorer without surgery) and not for cosmetic reasons.  We were trying to get the PO to tell us what C would miss out on seeing if the new prescription is not helping more, and we don’t have the surgery for her.

This is all so frustrating.  We want to do the right thing for C.

Anyhow, I’ll get her new prescription filled tomorrow, and we’ll go from there.  I hope that her eyes turn less with the new prescription which will help in the decision on surgery.  Her eyes are straight most of the time now, but there are times when they still turn.

Oh, I’m sorry it wasn’t better news, here’s hoping the new prescription is all that she needs. I think it was easier for us with Zoe because her eyes turned in so noticeably, even with glasses, that it was clear she wouldn’t be able to develop vision with both eyes unless we did the surgery. It’s awesome that your PO is open (and even suggesting) a second opinion. That always makes me trust a doctor more.

The new prescription doesn’t look like it will correct the crossing completely. C’s eyes still crosses sometimes with her glasses on. We got an appointment for a 2nd opinion later this month. We’ll see how it goes.
